Cork City FC are delighted to confirm that Alec Byrne has signed a new contract with the club for the 2022 season.
Byrne, who made his first team debut for the club in 2017, made 23 league appearances for the club last season, and he told CorkCityFC.ie that he can’t wait for the start of the new season: “I am buzzing to be back again for another year, and hopefully we can go one step further and get promoted. That is the aim, that is where this club should be, so that is the main focus for next season. There was a lot of competition for places in midfield last year, but I played most of the games and I will be looking to do that again this coming season. It is good for the team to have that competition for places, as it pushes everyone on, so hopefully we can have a big year next year.”
Byrne combines his footballing career with his studies at the club’s Premier Partner UCC, and he says he is happy with how that is going for him: “Yeah, it is great to be able to combine the two. With the club and UCC having the relationship they do, it really helps, and I am very happy to be able to pursue my studies while continuing to play for the club.”
“Having the fans back in was brilliant; I know it is a bit of a cliché but they really are the twelfth man and they really do spur us on. Especially when you are under the cosh and you need to dig in, they really get behind you, and hopefully it will be the same again next year.”
City boss Colin Healy welcomed news of Byrne signing back, saying: “It is great to have Alec back again for next season. He will be an important member of the team next year. As everyone knows, he has come through our academy, and on into the first team. He has been around the first team squad for a few years now, and he gained a lot of experience last year. We are looking for him to kick on and have a big season in 2022.”
