Cork City fell to a 3-1 defeat at Turners Cross against Wexford Youths in their latest SSE Airtricity Women’s National League game on Saturday.
City almost got off to a perfect start with an effort from Laura Shine forcing a save from the Wexford goalkeeper. Wexford however started to gain dominance of the ball and pushing the City defence back. They were rewarded for their efforts in the 16th minute with a goal from Aoibheann Clancy via a free kick from distance that went straight into the corner of the net. Wexford almost doubled their advantage two minutes later when Ellen Molloy forced a great save from Abby McCarthy.
Wexford continued to have the advantage for much of the first half but as the half went on City started to get more chances on the counter attack with Sarah McKevitt coming close in the 41st minute while on the verge of half time Eabha O’Mahony had a free kick well saved and the first half ended with Wexford having a 1-0 advantage.
Wexford doubled their lead in the 54th minute as a Wexford corner came in it was struck against the crossbar before Sinead Taylor managed to scramble it in to give Wexford a 2-0 lead. City continued to press for an equaliser with Sarah McKevitt again coming close with an effort just over the bar from distance. She would not be denied her goal however as she struck a precision shot from distance to make it 2-1 to Wexford.
Wexford would seal all three points in the 82nd minute as a good attacking team move from them saw the ball fall to the feel of Aoibheann Clancy who struck well from the edge of the box to make it 3-1 to the visitors and gave them all three points.
City are on the road again next Saturday 15th of May as they travel to Greenogue to face Peamount United in the SSE Airtricity Women’s National League with a 6pm kick off.
