Cork City fell to a 3-0 defeat in their opening game of the SSE Airtricity Women’s National League match against Galway at Turner’s Cross on Saturday.
Galway got an early lead scoring in the 7th minute as Nicole McNamara scored with a powerful close range header giving the visitors an early lead. City pushed for an equaliser with Lauren Singleton putting in a dangerous cross with the Galway goalkeeper just keeping it away from Nadine Seward.
Galway doubled their lead in the 28th minute as Aoibheann Costelloe put the visitors two up with a fine strike from distance. City nearly pulled one back in the 38th minute Lauren Singleton struck from 30 yards out with it headed for the top corner but it was just put wide and the first half ended 2-0 to Galway.
City started the second half on the front foot putting pressure on the Galway defence however they struggled to create meaningful chances on goal against a stubborn Galway defence with City’s best chances coming from corners which came to nothing. Galway finished the game in the 71st minute as Julie Ann Russel struck from the edge of the box to make it 3-0 which it finished.
Next up for City is a trip to Markets Field as they visit Treaty United in the SSE Airtricity Women’s National League next Saturday 12th of March with a 5pm kick off.
