Cork City fell to a 2-1 defeat at Turners Cross against Wexford Youths in their latest SSE Airtricity Women’s National League game.
In a quiet first half neither side could manage to create much in the way of clear chances, the visitors came close in the sixth minute as Kylie Murphy had a clear shot at goal but her tame effort trickled wide of the goal. At the other end City came close as Orlaith Deasy’s ball forward was flicked on by Becky Cassin into the path of Nadine Seward whose effort was tipped just over the bar but neither side could truly test each other’s keepers so the first half finished 0-0.
The second half was livelier with the visitors taking the lead in the 54th minute as Ellen Molloy scored a free kick from the edge of the penalty area curling the ball over the wall into the bottom right corner. City however would get back into the game quickly in the 63rd minute as Nadine Seward from the right wing put the ball into the path of the onrushing Becky Cassin who took a touch and fired it into the roof of the net scoring a spectacular goal to make it 1-1.
The visitors however would not be denied for long as in the 72nd minute Ciara Rossiter put in a cross which found Siun Murdiff at the far post who headed it home to make it 2-1 to the visitors. City would push for another equaliser but the Wexford defence stood strong and it finished 2-1 to Wexford Youths.
