Cork City ran out comfortable winners at Turner’s Cross on Saturday beating DLR Waves 4-1 thanks to a goal from Becky Cassin and a Laura Shine hat-trick in their latest SSE Airtricity Women’s National League game.
The opening 20 minutes of the game was a lively affair with City starting the stronger getting the opening goal in the seventh minute after a good cut inside to the penalty area from the left wing by Shaunagh McCarthy who squared it for Laura Shine who finished it from close range to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead.
The visitors quickly equalised in the 12th minute with Shauna Carroll leaping on a loose ball and striking it home from distance to make it 1-1. City however didn’t wait long to retake the lead as an incisive pass from midfield by Eva Mangan found Laura Shine at the edge of the box where she finished well to make it 2-1.
The remainder of the first half was a cagier affair with City pressing for a third but DLR Waves dangerous on the counter attack. Eva Mangan came close to making it three in the 21st minute with an effort from the edge of the box going just wide. While at the other end Jess Gleeson forced a good save from Abby McCarthy with a free kick outside the area and the first half finished 1-1.
City were again quick out of the blocks in the second half with Laura Shine completing her hat-trick in the 49th minute as Eva Mangan set Sarah McKevitt free on the right wing where she cut inside into the DLR penalty area and set it up for Shine to finish from close range to make it 3-1 to City.
City finished the scoring in the 64th minute as Nathalie O’Brien sent in a free kick from the left side of the pitch where it found Christina Dring who set it up for Becky Cassin to finish it from inside the six yard box to make it 4-1 to City.
While DLR Waves continued to try and get back into the game a resolute City defence managed to stay firm and City ran out 4-1 winners.
