WNL: Galway 5-1 City

Cork City fell to a 5-1 defeat at Eamonn Deacy Park in their latest SSE Airtricity Women’s National League game on Saturday.

Galway came out in the first half much stronger scoring in the first minute as Lynsey McKey sent in a corner that deflected in off a City defender to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. They doubled their lead in the 5th minute as McKey again sent in a corner which was put home by Bryce Reynolds to make it 2-0. They again struck from a corner in the eight minute as Shauna Brennan sent one in which was headed home well by Jamie Erickson to give the hosts a 3-0 lead.

City tried to get back into the game and come close in the 12th minute as an Orlaith Deasy cross found Lauren Singleton at the back post but her effort went just over the bar. City came very close again at the end of the first half as some good interplay between Nadine Seward and Lauren Singleton saw Seward get a shot in on goal which was just saved and Galway went into the half time break leading 3-0.

City came out strong at the start of the second half and got a goal back in the 52nd minute as some good interplay between Nadine Seward and Nathalie O’Brien saw Seward get to the byline on the right wing and send the ball across the face of goal where it was met at the far post by Laura Shine to apply the finish and make it 3-1.

Any hopes of a potential City comeback were swiftly dashed in the 54th minute as Lynsey McKey applied a volley finish to a Chloe Singleton ball into the box to make it 4-1 and again in the 57th minute as she applied an easy finish to a good cross from Julie-Ann Russell to make it 5-1. And while Galway would be reduced to 10 after Chloe Atkinson saw red for a clash with Shaunagh McCarthy Galway saw out the game at 5-1.

City are back in action at Turner’s Cross next Saturday 23rd of July as they host DLR Waves with a 5pm kick off in the SSE Airtricity Women’s National League.
