Cork City fell to a 6-1 defeat against Galway WFC in their latest SSE Airtricity Women’s National League game at Eamon Deacy Park on Saturday.
City got off to a bright start testing the Galway goalkeeper with a long range effort from Sarah McKevitt in the 9th minute before taking the lead in the 12th minute with Eva Mangan scoring with a stunning strike from distance. Galway got themselves back into the game in the 17th minute as a cross from the left wing took a deflection and found its way through to Chloe Singleton on the far post who finished well to level the sides.
The hosts continued to press City and took the lead in the 32nd minute as Chloe Singleton put in a cross from the right wing which was headed home by Kate Slevin. They increased their advantage in the 39th minute as Emma Starr first had a headed effort blocked by Nathalie O’Brien but she gathered the ball and scored to make it 3-1 going into half time.
The second half started quiet as neither side were able to really create much in the way of clear cut chances. However as the half went on the hosts began pressing the City defence more and more and eventually found the net in the 78th minute as a cross from the left wing was headed down into the path of Aoife Thompson who made it 4-1. Emma Starr got her second in the 85th minute with a good strike to make it 5-1 and Ellen Rose O’Flaherty rounded off the game winning the ball high up the field and firing it home after cutting in from the right wing with the last kick of the game to make it 6-1.
City are back in action at Turners Cross next Saturday 28th of August as they host Shelbourne in the SSE Airtricity Women’s National League with a 2pm kick off.
