Cork City fell to a 4-0 defeat against Shelbourne in their latest Women’s National League at Tolka Park on Saturday. City got off to a bright start nearly taking the lead in the early moments of the game with an Eabha O’Mahony corner finding Saoirse Noonan whose header was cleared off the line. O’Mahony came close with a free kick outside the box forcing a save from the Shelbourne goalkeeper. Shelbourne took the lead in the 31st minute when Rachel Graham struck from distance with a good strike. City almost immediately replied with Eabha O’Mahony finding herself free in the box but an excellent save from Rachel Kelly stopped her effort. Shelbourne doubled their lead with Jess Gargan scoring an excellent goal from the right side of the penalty area. City got off to a poor start to the second half being reduced to 10 with Maria O’Sullivan being sent off for a challenge outside the box. Shelbourne quickly took advantage of the player advantage by scoring a third via Gemma Whelan after a swift Shelbourne counter attack. Shelbourne quickly added a fourth with Pearl Slattery heading home from close range after a good cross into the box. City had chances to get a consolation goal with Saoirse Noonan having efforts in the 75th minute just off target an another effort in the 85th minute with a volley from the edge of the box just going wide but City were unable to get the goal and it finished 4-0 to Shelbourne City are next in action on the 8th of November as they host Treaty United at Bishopstown in the FAI Cup Semi Finals with a 2pm kick off.
