Cork City fell to a 2-0 defeat at the Showgrounds in their latest SSE Airtricity Women’s National League game on Saturday.
Sligo started the game quickly taking an early lead in the first minute as a Gemma McGuinness cross found Emma Doherty in the penalty area and she headed home from close range. City tried to get back into the game as Eva Mangan struck from distance but her shot took a deflection mid-flight so was easily gathered by the Sligo goalkeeper Mahon.
In a first half of few real chances City while getting more into the game in possession and territory struggled to create clear chances with Zara Foley having a shot blocked in the 21st minute and a dangerous Riona Crowley cross heading for Lauren Singleton but the cross was blocked and the first half ended with a one goal lead for the hosts.
The second half was also a quiet affair on the chances front as City tried to get back into the game and pressured a Sligo defence which stood resolute against the City attacks snuffing out potential chances. Nadine Seward came close running onto a ball over the top but the Sligo defence managed to snuff out the chance before a shot could be put away.
Sligo doubled their lead late in the game in the 85th minute as Leah Kelly put a pass into the path of Gemma McGuinness cutting in from the left wing who took it into the box and finished well to make it 2-0. City came very close to a consolation goal in injury time as Nathalie O’Brien put a ball across the penalty area to Aoibhin Donnelly but she couldn’t direct it home putting it just wide and it finished 2-0 to Sligo Rovers.
