Cork City fell to a 2-1 defeat in their latest Women’s National League game at Bishopstown on Saturday. In a tight first half City had the first real chance when Lauren Egbuloniu got past Galway’s goalkeeper Amanda Budden but her effort was blocked by the Galway defence. City again came close in the 12th minute when an excellent Sophie Liston cross came close to reaching Egbuloniu. At the other end Galway game close with an effort from distance. While both sides had attacks neither side was able to create much in the way of clear cut chances and the half ended all square at 0-0. Galway came out stronger in the early stages of the second half putting pressure on the City defence. Galway got the breakthrough in the 58th minute after taking advantage of a mix up in the City defence and Lindsay McKey put it away to give Galway a 1-0 lead. At the other end Laura Shine came close to getting the equaliser with an effort from the edge of the box but her effort was just wide. Galway continued to have the advantage putting pressure on the City defence hitting the crossbar. Galway doubled their lead in the 83rd minute again taking advantage of a mix-up in the City defence allowing McKey to again strike from the edge of the box making it 2-0. City got back into the game immediately after kick off, a good attacking run from second half substitute Nadine Seward saw her effort deflect out for a corner, the subsequent corner fell to Becky Cassin who headed it home to make it 2-1. While City pressed for a late equaliser they were unable to get a second and it finished 2-1 to Galway. Cork City are next in action on Saturday 31st of October when they travel to Tolka Park to play Shelbourne in the Women’s National League with a 2pm kick off.
